WHAT IF… WE’VE BEEN LOOKING FOR DANGER IN ALL THE WRONG PLACES?

The END Silence “WHAT IF…” Series 🎬 A DREAMTEAM Studios™ Production 🧵 END SILENCE™ | Awareness • Advocacy • Support • Healing • Hope

We teach children about danger.

We tell them not to talk to strangers. We teach them to stay close in crowded places, never get into an unfamiliar car, tell an adult when something frightens them, and run home when they are afraid.

But what happens when home is where the danger lives?

What happens when the person a child has been taught to run to is the person they need protection from?

And what happens when that child begins showing us that something is terribly wrong—but everyone sees the signs and nobody asks why?

Those are uncomfortable questions.

They are supposed to be.

SOME TRUTHS ARE DIFFICULT TO SAY OUT LOUD. SO WE PUT THIS ONE TO MUSIC.

“What If (The Monsters Live at Home)” is the original Patchwork Sound™ song created for this END SILENCE campaign. It asks the same questions these images ask — but gives them a voice that can follow someone long after the screen goes dark.

What If The Monsters Live at Home — Patchwork Sound original song for the END SILENCE What If campaign

This is not horror for entertainment. It is a song about the horror of being harmed by the very people and places a child is supposed to trust — and about refusing to keep protecting that darkness with silence.

Purchasing the song helps support the awareness, advocacy, survivor-support, healing, and child-protection work of END SILENCE.

WHAT IF HOME IS WHERE THE DANGER LIVES?

Home should be a child's first sanctuary. It should be where scraped knees are kissed, nightmares are chased away, mistakes are forgiven, meals are shared, and a child learns what safety feels like.

But a front door does not guarantee safety.

Neither does a family photograph.

Neither does a respectable neighborhood, a successful parent, a church membership, a good job, a clean house, or the appearance of a happy family.

Abuse does not announce itself to the neighborhood.

It can happen behind manicured lawns and closed curtains. It can coexist with birthday parties, family vacations, Sunday worship, school photographs, Christmas mornings, and smiling social-media posts.

That is one reason it can remain hidden for so long.

The outside world sees a home.

The child may experience a prison.

WHAT IF YOUR PROTECTOR IS YOUR ABUSER?

This may be one of the most difficult realities for adults to confront.

Children are dependent.

They cannot simply rent an apartment, get a different job, open a bank account, hire an attorney, drive themselves somewhere safe, or decide they are finished with a dangerous relationship.

Their survival depends upon adults.

That enormous imbalance of power becomes especially terrifying when the adult entrusted with protecting a child is the one causing the harm.

The child may depend upon that same person for food, clothing, transportation, shelter, permission, medical care, access to other adults, and sometimes their entire understanding of what is normal.

They may love the person hurting them.

They may fear losing their family.

They may have been threatened.

They may believe nobody will believe them.

They may have been taught that talking about family problems is betrayal.

They may believe the abuse is somehow their fault.

Or they may simply be too young to understand that what is happening to them is abuse.

Where does a child run when the person they are supposed to run to is the danger?

That question should bother us.

It should bother us enough to change the way we think about protecting children.

WHAT IF EVERYONE SAW THE SIGNS… AND NOBODY ASKED WHY?

Sometimes children tell us without telling us.

Something changes.

A child who once loved school suddenly cannot concentrate. Grades fall. Sleep changes. Anger appears seemingly from nowhere. A once-outgoing child withdraws. A child becomes unusually fearful, anxious, aggressive, exhausted, secretive, clingy, or desperate not to go somewhere—or desperate not to go home.

None of those things, by themselves, prove that a child is being abused. Children can struggle or change behavior for many reasons.

But significant or sudden changes deserve curiosity.

Instead, adults can become focused on correcting what they see.

Why are your grades falling?

Why are you acting like this?

Why can't you behave?

Why are you so angry?

Why are you causing problems?

Sometimes we need to ask a completely different question:

What happened?

Because a child who appears to have suddenly become “a problem” may actually be showing us that there is a problem.

Behavior can communicate what a child does not yet have the words—or the safety—to say.

THE DANGER OF THE “PERFECT” ABUSER

One of the greatest protections an abuser can have is the disbelief of everyone around them.

“But he's such a good father.”

“She would never do that.”

“They're such a wonderful family.”

“He's respected in the community.”

“She loves those children.”

“I've known him for twenty years.”

“They go to church every Sunday.”

None of those statements establishes what happens when nobody else is present.

We must be extremely careful about deciding that someone is incapable of abuse simply because our experience with that person has been different from the child's experience.

Character should matter.

Evidence should matter.

Warning signs should matter.

Children should matter.

Reputations should never matter more than their safety.

FAITH DOES NOT REQUIRE SILENCE

For a faith-based organization, this matters deeply to us.

God is not honored when evil is concealed to preserve appearances.

He is not glorified by protecting an institution, family name, ministry, marriage, leader, or reputation while someone vulnerable continues to suffer.

Scripture gives us a very different responsibility:

“Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction. Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy. — Proverbs 31:8–9 KJV

“Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy.” — Psalm 82:3 KJV

God sees what happens behind closed doors.

He sees the child who believes nobody sees.

He knows the truth that has been threatened into silence.

And when something has been entrusted to our attention, our faith should not make us easier to silence.

It should make us harder to silence.

THIS IS WHY WE ASK “WHAT IF?”

The END Silence “WHAT IF…” Series is not designed to give comfortable answers.

It is designed to make us ask better questions.

What if the child everyone calls difficult is terrified?

What if the child whose grades suddenly collapsed is trying to survive something nobody knows about?

What if the person everyone trusts is the person that child fears?

What if the family everyone admires has a secret?

What if the survivor telling their story today was once the child nobody believed?

And perhaps the most important question:

What if noticing is not enough?

Awareness without action changes very little.

We need adults willing to learn warning signs. Teachers willing to remain curious. Churches willing to protect people before reputations. Families willing to confront painful truths. Communities willing to support survivors. Systems willing to hold offenders accountable.

And we need survivors to hear something too:

What happened to you matters.

Your story matters.

Your healing matters.

You were never created merely to remain the keeper of someone else's secret.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT IS UP TO ALL OF US

END Silence, Inc. is a faith-based advocacy and survivor-support nonprofit working to bring abuse out of darkness through awareness, education, advocacy, survivor support, healing, and action.

But END Silence cannot simply be the name of an organization.

It has to become something people are willing to do.

So we are asking you to take the next step.

Sign the END Silence petition at Change.org/EndSilence and add your voice to the call for stronger protection and accountability.

Share the “WHAT IF…” Series. One uncomfortable question placed in front of the right person may cause them to look at a situation differently.

Learn the warning signs of abuse.

Listen when a survivor speaks.

Take significant changes in a child's behavior seriously.

Ask better questions.

Support organizations doing the work.

And when something needs to be said—

END SILENCE.
