18 Hours Away—One Prayer Away

When a mother could not reach her daughter, she reached for Jesus.

Written by Linda Overmyer

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”— Psalm 46:1 KJV

There are moments when distance is measured in more than miles.

It is measured in helplessness. In unanswered calls. Washed-out roads. Fallen lines. A ticking clock. A television screen filled with images of destruction—and the unbearable knowledge that someone you love is trapped somewhere inside it.

For Linda Overmyer, that distance was eighteen hours.

Her adult daughter had survived the fury of a hurricane, but the danger had not passed. She was physically fragile, cut off in a flooded town, and desperately in need of medical help. Linda could not get to her. She could not hold her, protect her, stop the bleeding, restore her strength, or make the distance disappear. She was her mother—and she could do nothing. Nothing except pray. But prayer is not nothing.

Prayer is not the powerless thing we turn to after every human option has failed. Prayer is the moment we place what we cannot reach into the hands of the One who is already there.

That desperate night became the heart of Linda’s song, “18 Hours Away—One Prayer Away.”

A Mother Trapped by Distance

The song begins quietly—with the fear mothers know before anyone says a word.

Something is wrong. An ocean of distance stands between Linda and her daughter. The hurricane has passed through, leaving devastation behind, but Linda’s personal storm is only beginning. She knows her daughter needs help. She knows time matters. Yet every mile between them feels immovable.

“And I’m trapped right here in my own skin.”

That line captures the agony of loving someone you cannot reach. Linda is not merely waiting. She is fighting every instinct inside her that says a mother should be there.

She should be holding her daughter.

She should be doing something.

But she cannot cross the sky. She cannot repair the roads. She cannot restore the telephone lines or bring doctors into a flooded town.

Fear keeps presenting her with everything she cannot do.

Faith reminds her of the One who can.

Jesus Was Already There

The central truth of this song is not that eighteen hours suddenly disappeared.

It is that Jesus never needed to travel them.

Linda could not reach her daughter—but Christ was already standing beside her.

He was present through the hurricane.

He was present in the damaged town.

He was present in the frightened mother’s room.

He was present in the silence between telephone calls.

He was present when Linda’s hands began to tremble and when her heart could no longer understand.

“I lift your name up to the heavens,And I place you in His hands.”

This is where the song becomes more than a mother’s lament. It becomes a testimony of surrender.

Surrender does not mean the fear was imaginary. It does not mean the danger no longer mattered. It means Linda chose to trust Jesus inside a situation she could not control.

She placed her daughter into hands stronger than her own.

“If I Could Take Her Place”

Then the song breaks open.

Every restraint falls away as Linda cries:

“If I could take her place, You know I would!”

That is the heart of a mother.

If she could have crossed those miles in a single breath, she would have done it. If she could have stood in the storm, carried the pain, purified her daughter’s blood, or given her daughter her own breath, she would not have hesitated.

But this is also where Linda confronts the limit of human love.

A mother may be willing to take her child’s place, but she cannot always do it.

Jesus can enter the places we cannot.

He can stand in the storm we cannot reach. He can carry someone through the valley we cannot cross. He can hear the prayer that breaks before it ever becomes a complete sentence.

Linda’s cry is not polished. It is not distant or decorative.

It is a mother pleading with the Lord of all:

“The storm may rage, the night may fall,But You are still the Lord of all!”

This is faith with tears running down its face.

The Meaning of “One Prayer Away”

“18 Hours Away—One Prayer Away” does not promise that faith prevents every storm or guarantees that every answer will come in the way we expect.

It offers something deeper.

Distance limits us—but it does not limit God.

Floodwater cannot block Him.

Broken communication lines cannot silence Him.

Darkness cannot hide someone from Him.

A medical crisis does not take Him by surprise.

When Linda could not place her hands on her daughter, she asked Jesus to hold her. When she could not calm the storm around her, she asked Jesus to speak peace over the storm within her. When fear insisted that her daughter was impossibly far away, faith answered:

She is only one prayer away.

This song is for every mother who has stared at a telephone and begged it to ring.

It is for every parent separated from an adult child by miles, illness, disaster, estrangement, addiction, deployment, incarceration, or circumstances beyond their control.

It is for every person who has whispered, “Jesus, go where I cannot go.”

And it is a reminder that He can.

The Lyrics

“18 Hours Away—One Prayer Away”

Written by Linda Overmyer

I woke up with a mother’s fear, An ocean standing between us here. Eighteen hours across the sky, Watching the storm on the news tonight. You made it through the howling wind,When the hurricane came crashing in.But now the hardest part begins,And I’m trapped right here in my own skin.

When my hands begin to tremble,When my heart can’t understand,I lift your name up to the heavens,And I place you in His hands.

Jesus, hold my child tonight,Since I can’t be there to hold her tight. Touch her failing body, touch the place That needs Your healing, love, and grace.Stop the bleeding, calm the storm,Wrap her in Your mighty arms.Though eighteen hours keep us apart,She’s never far from a mother’s heart.I’m choosing faith when fear says no—Jesus, heal her. Jesus, go.

The roads are washed, the lines are down,She’s cut off in a flooded town. No doctors there to turn the tide,Just the ticking clock and a mother’s cry.Lord, she’s fragile and she’s weak,I don’t even know if she can speak. But You’re the One who parts the sea,So part the clouds and hear my plea.

I can’t cross the sky this moment,I can’t make the distance disappear, But I know the One who holds tomorrow Is already standing there.

If I could take her place, You know I would!Stand right in the fire where she stood!Purify her blood and give her breath,Pull her from the valley of the shadow of death! You held her through the hurricane,Now speak Your peace over this pain! The storm may rage, the night may fall,But You are still the Lord of all!

Jesus, hold my child tonight,Let Your healing power shine bright.Touch her body, touch her soul,Make every broken piece whole.Stop the bleeding, calm the fear,Let her feel that You are near. And though eighteen hours stand between,Your loving hands are all she’s seen.I surrender every fear,Knowing, Lord, that You are near.

Eighteen hours away…

But only one prayer away.

Jesus, I’m placing her in Your hands.

I trust You.

Please heal my child.

When You Cannot Reach Them

Perhaps someone you love feels eighteen hours away today.

Maybe the distance is physical. Maybe it is emotional. Maybe you know exactly where they are but have no power to change what is happening around them.

You may not be able to reach them with your hands.

You may not have the right words.

You may not be able to repair the road between you.

But you can carry their name to Jesus.

He does not need directions.

He does not need the roads to reopen.

He does not need a telephone line.

He is not waiting somewhere far away.

He is already there.

Eighteen hours away. One prayer away.

A Prayer for the Person You Cannot Reach

Lord Jesus, You see the person I love, even when I cannot see them. You know what is happening in their body, heart, home, and mind. Go where I cannot go. Hold them where I cannot hold them. Protect them where I cannot stand guard.

Calm the storm around them and the fear within me. Give me faith when fear says no. Help me release what I cannot control without believing for one moment that You have lost control. I place their name, their life, and every unanswered question into Your hands.

You are already there.

In Jesus’ name, amen.
