We had someone email us asking what the song was actually about. Unsure if he took the time to listen or not, but I thought the question was worth addressing! Thank you for asking.

A Joy the Dark Can’t Touch

The Story, the Message, and the Music

🎶 The Message Behind the Music

At its heart, “A Joy the Dark Can’t Touch” expresses a truth I know personally: deep suffering and real joy can exist in the same life.

This song is my expression of gratitude to Jesus Christ. When I praise Him, I bring the woman I am today, the child I once was, and the years of learning how to keep moving forward. There is a whole life behind that praise.

Jesus is the foundation of my joy. His love gives me something lasting to hold onto, including when circumstances remain difficult and questions remain unanswered.

💜 Holding Both Pain and Joy

You can grieve someone you love and still be thankful to God. You can have unanswered questions and still trust Jesus. You can remember something painful, shed tears over it, and later find yourself laughing, creating, or singing with your whole heart.

Those moments of joy are real, too.

People can disappoint us. Circumstances change. Something we hoped for may never happen the way we imagined. Yet Jesus remains worthy of our love.

“And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.”— John 16:22, KJV

Jesus spoke those words to His disciples as He prepared them for sorrow and the joy of seeing Him again. His promise points me toward the hope of His resurrection. The One I am praising is alive.

🎹 Expressing Praise Through Art

Creativity gives me a way to share what ordinary conversation sometimes cannot hold. Through DJ Penny™, music, movement, and visual storytelling, I can express gratitude with energy and personality.

Beauty and joy belong in a testimony, alongside honesty about the hard parts. Creating something joyful is one way I give thanks for the life, imagination, and opportunities God has given me.

The heart of this video is an invitation to celebrate Jesus with me—to remember His goodness and consider where your own hope rests.

🧵 Connecting to END Silence™

My faith shapes the work I do through END Silence. I believe our response to suffering must include compassion, truth, and action.

We can listen to survivors, take children’s safety seriously, respect boundaries, and make room for difficult conversations. We can also encourage one another to discover interests, make music, build friendships, and experience joy.

Speaking about pain and celebrating joy both have a place in that work. People deserve opportunities to be heard, supported, and encouraged. They deserve room to create something beautiful with their lives.

✝️ What I Hope You Take Away

You are welcome to bring your whole heart before Jesus: your gratitude, your grief, your questions, and your hopes. You do not need a perfectly resolved life to offer Him an honest prayer.

“These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.”— John 15:11, KJV

This song is my offering of praise. If it helps someone remember His goodness, turn toward Him, or find a reason to sing again, I am grateful.

🎼 A Glimpse Into the Lyrics

I learned the tune of empty rooms,The rhythm of goodbye.I watched the world put on a smileAnd sell me hollow lies.— Written by deZengo®

These opening lines give voice to loneliness and disappointment. They make room for the testimony that follows: a heart that has known sorrow still has reason to praise Jesus.

Official Lyrics

I learned the tune of empty rooms,

The rhythm of goodbye.

I watched the world put on a smile

And sell me hollow lies.

And when the darkness whispered, "Child,

That's all you'll ever know,"

I had no words to answer back—

Just an ember's stubborn glow.

[ Pre-Chorus ]

But a feeling isn't gospel,

And a shadow isn't proof.

I turned my eyes to Calvary

And saw what love could do!

[Chorus —]

I'm gonna shout, I'm gonna sing,

Let the rafters start to ring!

The night told lies; the cross told truth,

The empty tomb is living proof!

He loved me first, my Savior lives,

No storm can steal the love He gives.

I know, I know, I know this much:

I've got a joy the dark can't touch!

[Verse 2 —]

The world said love was something earned;

He showed me love was grace.

He bore the thorns, He took the nails,

He died there in my place.

They laid Him in a borrowed tomb

And thought His work was done.

The stone rolled back, the grave stood bare—

Death couldn't hold God's Son!

[Pre-Chorus —]

The world can break a thousand vows,

But Jesus never will.

The hands that bore the nails for me

Are holding on to me still.

[Chorus — ]

I'm gonna shout, I'm gonna sing,

Let the rafters start to ring!

The night told lies; the cross told truth,

The empty tomb is living proof!

He loved me first, my Savior lives,

No storm can steal the love He gives.

I know, I know, I know this much:

I've got a joy the dark can't touch!

This is not where our story ends,

It's only just begun.

I won't deny the dark I've known—

But look what Love has done.

I know He loved me first!

HE LOVED ME FIRST!

I know He paid my debt!

AT CALVARY!

I know His Spirit lives!

HIS POWER'S IN ME!

I know who my kin are!

THE BODY OF CHRIST!

I know my Savior lives!

HE IS ALIVE!

I know when that trumpet sounds—

I'M GOING HOME!

[Final Chorus — ]

We're gonna sing, we're gonna sing,

Let the rafters start to ring!

The night told lies; the cross told truth,

The empty tomb is living proof!

He loved us first, our Savior lives,

No storm can steal the love He gives.

We know, we know, we know this much:

We've got a joy the dark can't touch!

[Outro —]

Who loved us first?

JESUS CHRIST!

Who conquered death?

JESUS CHRIST!

Hallelujah! Let the whole world sing!

All glory to Jesus, our risen King!

HE LIVES!
